Early seasonal spirits – lights on a string

Because of the recent snowfall and the much colder temperatures, I have been hit with a Danish phenomenon:

Hygge

Translation: a Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of coziness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment. (Wiki)

Seriously, this getting dark so early takes some getting used to. Especially because it will be like this until whenever spring decides to make an appearance next year. That’s months from now.

So, when I helped my partner lug the Halloween bins back up the ceiling ladder to stash in the little attic space under the roof, I had him locate the Christmas lights bin.

Look, I’m not a fan of all the commercialized hoopla this holiday pushes on us, but I like a few decorations as we get deeper into December.

Except, it’s not December yet.

But, this year, there’s snow on the ground already…

It’s a little early for snow in these parts of Canada. Many years when the children were small and hoped for snow in late November and into the Christmas season, we never got any, or at least not till January or later.

This year is different.

Which is why I’m talking about Christmas lights in November. ๐Ÿ˜€

I may put up a few lights without the decorations just to cozy up the place a little. In later afternoons and evenings, I don’t like a lot if bright lights, but I do like softer, warmer lights to brighten up the place a bit.

Lamps, and lights on a string, will do that.

Perhaps this is something my girl and I can do this weekend while the boys are out of town. Take out and de-tangle the Christmas lights and hang them up around some windows.

But first , I have to get my phone fixed, there’s something wrong with my connection outside of the wifi at home, and we have a trip to a tea shop planned. It’s a PA day today, the children are off school and lo, I do not have to take anyone to a rink today. ๐Ÿ˜Š

TGIF. Who has exciting plans for the weekend?

  1. I’m hiding from social media this weekend and trying to decide between binging on Hulu or catching up on all my reading. (Blogs, library books, church studies, etc…) Most likely it will be a bit of both. Especially because I’ve been so agitated lately I can’t sit still and stay focused on any one thing for very long. No matter WHAT I end up doing, I’ll look for the joy and gratitude in everything. Stay warm and hopefully your Samsung stays cold.

  3. Current mood is: I’m not bothering with any Christmas decorations this year. I imagine that will change the closer we get to the holiday.

As for this weekend, my “exciting plans” are to read and to bingewatch Friends and American Horror Story.

      1. I like LOOKING at the decorations but oh how I hate putting them up and taking them down. I have a very short attention span IN GENERAL so to have to stand there and do something as tedious as putting hooks on ornaments and then trying to figure out where they should go on the tree is absolute torture and I just want to cry.

  4. I love the hygge concept – maybe because I love cozy and homely. ๐Ÿ˜Š Iโ€™ve started putting some fairy lights around too and the candles are lit in the evening. Just those small changes make winter evenings more welcome. Have a cozy weekend.

  5. Iโ€™m contemplating making Pulled Pork in the oven – a first for me. New movie: Ford v. Ferrari. My weekly gym workout. ๐Ÿ˜Š Also, Iโ€™ve had this odd inclination to handcraft Christmas Cards and mail out about a dozen to family and friends. Enjoy your weekend. โ„๏ธ

  6. I’m all about the “hygge” hype (hence, my blog name having the word ‘cozy’ in it). I love me some little fairy lights for those dark evenings! Something not too strong, but emits a lovely glow.
Nothing particularly exciting this weekend – probably more work at our condo to get it ready for the move-in date but otherwise, bunkering it down and perhaps watching Harry Styles on SNL and the Santa Claus Parade on Sunday. Happy weekend!

  7. I think we will be taking advantage of the warmish weather we are supposed to be getting over the weekend to put our outside lights up. I really don’t like doing stuff before Thanksgiving (end of November for the US), but the weather has been so wonky, I really don’t want to take the chance of having to do it in subzero temps. They will go up, but they won’t go on until I would normally turn them on. I’m also hoping that will pull me out of my extreme cranky mood I can’t seem to shake.

  8. Nothing much for the weekend, but I did just restock my candle supply. I am of Danish descent on my fathers side and found all the concepts of hygge (which I still cannot pronounce correctly) pretty interesting. I love candles and homey things and thick soft throws to snuggle in… At least learning about hygge has given me an excuse to embrace my Danish roots.

  9. A chef whoโ€™s on one of the food network competition shows has a place down the block from me. Going to try that Saturday night. Tomorrow seeing a movie โ€œPain and a Gloryโ€. Sunday we rented an archery lane, and going to get pho. Exciting? No. Fun? Yes

      1. My husband is nuts about food, what where….my daughter and I went to Paris without him, we said it was a great trip because we werenโ€™t preoccupied with food….we ate when we were hungry at whatever place looked good….not so with husband…
