Self-image perception

My protagonist in one of my stories is insecure about her image. You know, appearance, attractiveness, stamina, that kind of thing.

I want to explore how she sees herself, as well as how she perceives how others see her. How men see her in particular (or, more correctly, how she thinks men see her).

I’m trying to address all the usual stuff: weight, shape, fitness, sexuality…all of it.

Sounds convoluted, right?

It is. πŸ™„

So me being me, I went to research this topic. I went on blogs using hash tags, I googled specific terms, I used psychology material, I even visited websites I’d rather the kids didn’t know about. πŸ˜‡

Lordy. πŸ™ƒ

Here’s my preliminary conclusion:

Women are complicated.

Did you know this? (Don’t answer that…) πŸ˜‰

Lol

So I don’t know what I’m going to do. Pick one characteristic and develop it, or throw them all in a bag and see what happens?

Or maybe I’ll just quit writing. πŸ€”

(Probably not.) 😊

I may however halt writing for a time and go on a cleaning frenzy…and then go back to writing.

Sigh.

OK, I’ll keep writing. It appears that I seem to possess this internal propulsion to keep my fingers flying across the keyboard.

I’m going to need β˜•and 🍫 and🍷.

Here’s my other idea: I will set up a newsletter type link in the fiction page where you can sign up to read my sample chapters.

I’m going to have to spend some time trying to figure out how to do this, so bear with me.

Reason for this, as opposed to just posting the stories, is that I want to know who’s reading. Frankly, I don’t want my kids to access this stuff right now (I doubt they read my blog but it is public and they know about it…)

I’ll keep you posted.

In the meantime, it’s Friday and this weekend marks the last regular season ringette games for my daughter, one local and one away. The teen begins playoffs on Saturday night although will still be a spectator, not a player, for the first round in order for his collarbone to heal completely.

After that, my rink time may slow down a bit.

Which may increase my writing time, or my procrastination time.

Ha. 😊

Happy Friday!

  1. Are you saying you don’t have experience with this? If so, I’m totally that personality and could answer questions.

One thing to note is that the lack of confidence all around is not prevelant in everything, AND diminishes when given a safe environment.

We’re complex beings, after all. πŸ™‚

    1. Of course I do. I’m probably the least confident person in my circle of people I know. πŸ™‚ But that’s part of the reason why I have to do something about it. This seems a good way…put what I know into a character that’s embellished to my heart’s content. Some of the components are similar to me, some not…and see what happens.

I find it therapeutic. But I’m just beginning.

Yes, I may have some questions at some point. πŸ™‚

  2. What I usually do when I’m writing is take a deep breath, a bite of chocolate, a sip of coffee (or wine☺️) and then just write and write and write until the character has introduced themselves to me. I more use β€˜my life’ as incidental character development research. (Oh, boy. WHAT must my characters be like πŸ˜‚) Although I often have a cackle when I hear what some writers google as research: how frightening would it be to have the police knocking on your door, asking why you were googling the latest nuclear weapons on the market! πŸ˜‚ xx
